Scope and Content North-east barracks-range from outside, Kilchurn Castle on the banks of Loch Awe, Glenorchy, Argyll Kilchurn Castle was a government base in 1654 when it resisted a Royalist siege, in 1685 during the Earl of Argyll's revolt, and during both Jacobite risings. It was also garrisoned by the Earl of Breadalbane's private army after the 1689 Highland War. Like the rest of the barracks housing about 200 of the Earl's private army, the north-east range consisted of three accommodation storeys above a basement kitchen The 1689 Highland War was waged on behalf of James II by 'Bonny' Dundee - John Graham of Claverhouse, Viscount Dundee. His Highlanders swept away General Mackay's government troops at Killiecrankie, but Dundee was killed and the army soon dispersed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
