Scope and Content Exterior of east-range (barrack-block) of Kilchurn Castle on the banks of Loch Awe, Glenorchy, Argyll Kilchurn Castle was a government base in 1654 when it resisted a Royalist siege, in 1685 during the Earl of Argyll's revolt, and during both Jacobite risings. It was also garrisoned by the Earl of Breadalbane's private army after the 1689 Highland War. The east-range (right) was built in the 1690s to accommodate about 200 of the laird's soldiers. It is possibly the earliest surviving barrack-block in Britain. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
