Scope and Content Early 20th-century view of acid-producing tower, Inverurie paper Mills, Aberdeenshire The acid-producing tower was built around 1890 to service the Paper Mills of Thomas Tait and Sons Ltd which had been established in 1852. Its design was provided, or influenced, by C D Eckman. It was converted to a water-tower in the later 20th century. Water, and perhaps calcium hydroxide, trickled down a lead-lined shaft from tanks at the top to dissolve lumps of limestone to make calcium bisulphate. Sulphur dioxide from pyrites burners stopped sulphur trioxide and sulphuric acid forming. C D Eckman of Sweden developed the manufacture of calcium bisulphate, an acid, in the later 19th century. It was used in paper making as a new way of turning wood chips into pulp. However, the acid caused the product to decay over long periods. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
