Scope and Content Rock cuttings near Crinan, Crinan Canal, Argyll The Crinan Canal was built in 1794-1801 to join Loch Gilp and Loch Crinan and is still operational. Though only 14.48 km long, its construction was difficult because the ground was either too soft or too rocky. This shows one of the places where it was necessary to cut into the rock in order to build the canal. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
