Scope and Content Workers in machine shed at Blackpots Brick and Tile Works, Whitehills, Knock Head, Grampian Blackpots Brick and Tile Works was established on Blackpots Farm by Dr Saunders, and extended by his son in 1788. It produced pantiles until the early 20th century, bricks until 1946 and drainage-tiles from 1840 until it closed in the 1970s. This shows six of the workforce of seven at work in the machine shed in 1971. The same number of people were employed in 1840. Although Scottish potteries made some use of local clay, their sites were usually chosen for their nearness to a good supply of coal. It took about 15 tons of coal to fire one ton of pottery.
