Scope and Content Front of kiln-block of earlier Murrayshall Limeworks, Cambusbarron, Stirlingshire The earlier Murrayshall Limeworks dates from before 1841. It burned local limestone deposits using coal from Bannockburn. In 1860 it had three kilns in good working order. It was disused by 1896-9 when a newer works to the north took over the name. Following standard practice, the kiln-block was built into a bank to make it easier to load or 'charge' the kilns from above. Each arch contained two draw-holes or 'eyes' for drawing off the quicklime. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
