Scope and Content Poster advertising the attractions of Portobello Bathing Pool, Portobello, Edinburgh. Illustration by Tom Curr. Portobello Swimming Pool, designed to Olympic specifications by Ian Warner of the City Engineer's department was, when it opened in 1936, one of the wonders of Edinburgh. It cost £90,000 to build, but closed in 1980 and was eventually demolished in 1989. This 1930s poster advertises the attractions of the Art Deco Pavilion which included a restaurant, ballroom and observation balcony. The open-air pool also featured underwater illumination and Scotland's first electric wave-making machine. Illustration by Tom Curr. The pool had accommodation for 6,000 spectators who enjoyed diving displays, races and floodlit evening galas. It was equipped with a wave-making machine which could produce 1m-high waves, giving a realistic imitation of sea-breakers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
