Scope and Content Drawing showing general view of tower blocks, Hutchesontown-Gorbals, Glasgow Hutchesontown-Gorbals was one of the first three Comprehensive Development Areas designated in Glasgow in 1950s and 1960s. Its purpose was to clear the old tenement slums and provide new high density housing in the form of tower blocks of flats. Robert Matthews and Sir Basil Spence were appointed as design consultants to the City Architect, Archibald Jury. The blocks in this drawing were built to Spence's designs in 1960-6. These flat-roofed, concrete-built blocks were demolished in 1993. Sir Basil Spence (1907-76) was one of Scotland's leading architects after World War II. He designed many prominent buildings including Coventry Cathedral, Edinburgh University Main Library and many schemes for universities and local councils. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
