Scope and Content View of interior of St Benedict's Roman Catholic Church (now demolished), No 60 Drumchapel Road, Glasgow St Benedict's Roman Catholic Church on Drumchapel Road was designed by the Glasgow firm of architects, Gillespie, Kidd & Coia, and was built 1964-70. Thought to be one of their best designs, its copper roof swept upwards like a gigantic sail. This shows the unusual and dramatic shape of the timber-lined roof inside the church. Resting on a massive cross-beam (right) it curved up to a clerestory-style range of windows in the apex, which lit the interior. It was demolished in 1991. Most of the work done by the Glasgow practice of Gillespie, Kidd & Coia was carried out by Jack Coia, who took over the firm when both John Gaff Gillespie and William Kidd died. His main works were for the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
