Scope and Content Drawing of governor system of beam-engine in Garlogie Mill, Garlogie, Grampian This mid 19th-century beam-engine is virtually intact and is the only Scottish example of its type still in its original position. It is a house-built rotative beam-engine of medium size, with a double-acting cylinder, separate condenser and air-pump. The governor regulates the engine's rotation. As it speeds up, centrifugal force lifts the ball-shaped fly-weights. The arms pull down on the lever working the throttle mechanism, releasing steam from the governor throttle-valve, so slowing the engine. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
