Scope and Content Section of drying-shed at Blackpots Brick and Tile Works, Whitehills, Knock Head, Grampian Blackpots Brick and Tile Works was established on Blackpots Farm by Dr Saunders, and extended by his son in 1788. It produced pantiles until the early 20th century, bricks until 1946 and drainage-tiles from 1840 until it closed in the 1970s. The moulded clay tiles were carried on three-tiered barrows to the drying-shed and laid on racks to cure naturally. The wooden louvers provided ventilation. Although Scottish potteries made some use of local clay, their sites were usually chosen for their nearness to a good supply of coal. It took about 15 tons of coal to fire one ton of pottery.
