Scope and Content Interior view of the chapel from the south-west, Falkland Palace, Fife Falkland Palace was built in 1500-13 for King James IV, and altered by James V in 1537-41. Repairs were carried out during the 17th and 19th centuries, and it was restored in 1952 when it became the property of The northational Trust for Scotland. This is the chapel on the second floor of the south range. The oak ceiling by Richard Stewart dates from c.1540 and is divided into compartments by moulded ribs. The painted cartouches, royal emblems and initials of 1633 were restored in 1896. The north (seen here) and south walls bear painted friezes, and two tapestries cover the panelling (left). Next to these is the canopied Royal Pew, dating from the 1890s, but incorporating 17th-century fragments. The chapel is still used for worship. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
