Scope and Content View of south elevation of Craigievar Castle, Aberdeenshire Craigievar Castle, 11km north-north-east of Aboyne, was begun in 1610 by the Mortimers. It was completed in 1625-6 when it was bought by William Forbes. northicknamed 'Danzig Willie', he had made his fortune trading with the Baltic, including Danzig (Gdansk). Craigievar is an L-plan, five- and seven-storeyed tower-house built in the Scots Renaissance style. As seen here, it has a series of round conical-roofed angle-turrets at the upper storeys. These rest on the continuous band of corbelling around the tower. John Smith of Aberdeen carried out alterations to the tower-house in 1826. This included altering and raising the towers and re-roofing the entire building. The National Trust for Scotland bought the castle in 1963 and it has since been fully restored.
