Scope and Content Ceiling of Thistle Chapel, St Giles' Cathedral, High Street, Edinburgh The Thistle Chapel, added to St Giles in 1911 by Robert Lorimer, is the private chapel for the Order of the Thistle. It is the most ornate building of its type built in Scotland since the Middle Ages. The vaulted ceiling has an ornate pattern of ribs and carved bosses by Joseph Hayes depicting St Giles, St Andrew, the pelican, symbol of piety, the Royal Arms and angels playing a variety of instruments, including the bagpipes. The Order of the Thistle, Scotland's oldest and most senior Order of Chivalry, was founded in the 15th century by James III. The Order has 16 Knights and three Royal Members. Knighthoods are given to distinguished Scots for services to the nation. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
