Date 3/1969

Catalogue Number ML 1125

Category Photographs and Off-line Digital Images

Copies SC 358506

Scope and Content View from north west of stone gas-holder at Musselburgh Gasworks, East Lothian The stone gasometer-house at Musselburgh Gasworks was erected in 1831 for the company serving Musselburgh and Portobello established in that year. It survived until 1970, by which time the container itself had long disappeared. The stone gasometer-house was ventilated by tall windows, originally containing wooden slats or louvres. The structure at the top of the roof is all that remains of a wooden slatted cupola. For (mistaken) safety reasons, the first gas-containers were housed in stone or brick buildings. However, these could trap an explosive mixture of leaked gas and air. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
