Scope and Content View from downstream showing central portion of Duchess Bridge, Langholm Duchess Bridge was built in 1813 by William Keir junior, and is probably the oldest surviving cast-iron bridge in Scotland. The bridge is made up of two parallel cast iron arches, or arch-ribs. These are braced by transverse ribs. The railings and the iron scrolls attaching them to the rest of the structure are probably original. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
