Scope and Content General view of acid-producing tower at Broomend Paper Mills, Inverurie, Aberdeenshire Situated on the west bank of the River Don, a paper mill was established at Inverurie for Thomas Tait & Sons Ltd. in 1852. The complex is dominated by the five-storeyed rectangular brick tower on the right. The complex was partly damaged by fire in 1979. This 28m-high tower dates from c.1890 and was designed to produce calcium bisulphate, an acid liquor in which wood chips were boiled for pulping under pressure. The tower was built at a time when this method was just starting to be used for paper-making. The complex was powered by water from a canal nearby, and a system of waterwheels and turbines produced the power to work the mills. There was also a narrow gauge railway system in operation at the complex. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
