Scope and Content Drawing of broch at Keiss, Caithness, being excavated by Samuel Laing in 1863 Keiss broch was one of some 30 archaeological sites excavated by Sir Francis Tress Barry (1825-1907) in Caithness. It had previously been examined by Samuel Laing in 1863 but he had only excavated the upper part of the mound. This drawing comes from 'Prehistoric Remains in Caithness' published by Laing in 1866. It was not until Barry carried out his excavations between 1890-93 that the full extent of the surviving broch was revealed. Sir Francis Tress Barry was MP for Windsor, Berkshire between 1890 and 1906. He had enjoyed a distinguished diplomatic and business career, and began to take an active interest in archaeology after his purchase of Keiss Castle, Caithness in 1890.
