Scope and Content Drawing of chambered cairn at Shean, Stemster, Caithness Sir Francis Tress Barry (1825-1907) excavated over 30 archaeological sites in Caithness between 1890 and 1906. This watercolour drawing, which is by John Nicolson, illustrates a crouched human skeleton discovered by Barry in the chambered cairn at Shean. Barry relied on John Nicolson to supervise his excavations and, in instances like this, to create sketches and drawings to show the discoveries. Nicolson was recognised for his knowledge of local history, as well as his skills as an artist. Sir Francis Tress Barry was MP for Windsor, Berkshire between 1890 and 1906. He had enjoyed a distinguished diplomatic and business career, and began to take an active interest in archaeology after his purchase of Keiss Castle, Caithness in 1890.
