Scope and Content Stone objects found during the course of excavations at Keiss, Whitegate and 'Road' brochs, Caithness Sir Francis Tress Barry (1825-1907) excavated over 30 archaeological sites in Caithness between 1890 and 1906. This photograph illustrates querns, stone vessels and other stone objects found during the excavations at three broch sites. Barry recognised the need to make a record of his work and this is one of several photographs which show the artefacts he found. They were photographed on a grassy bank in the garden at Keiss Castle. Sir Francis Tress Barry was MP for Windsor, Berkshire between 1890 and 1906. He had enjoyed a distinguished diplomatic and business career, and began to take an active interest in archaeology after his purchase of Keiss Castle, Caithness in 1890.
