Scope and Content Pictish symbol stone at Ackergill Links, Caithness This Pictish Symbol Stone was found in 1896 by John Nicolson, Nybster, who took it to Sir Francis Tress Barry. From the time of his purchase of Keiss Castle in 1890, Barry played an active role in gathering information about the archaeology of Caithness. The stone is of grey slate and bears the lower part of a fish symbol, a rectangular symbol, divided and decorated with spirals, as well as an ogham inscription. It is broken at the top. Sir Francis Tress Barry was MP for Windsor, Berkshire between 1890 and 1906. He had enjoyed a distinguished diplomatic and business career, and excavated some 30 archaeological sites and monuments in Caithness. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
