Scope and Content Beetling machines in Avonbank Bleach and Dye Works, Larkhall, Lanarkshire Avonbank Bleach and Dye Works belonged to D C Miller and Company which imported cotton cloth from Lancashire to manufacture specialised 'Scotch Holland' cotton roller blinds. These had a dust-repellent sheen created by beetling machines. Each half of the beetling machine operated independently of the other, hammering the cloth with a battery of 'beetles'. Cotton cloth for 'Scotch Holland' blinds was singed to remove hair and fluff, washed and bleached or dyed, and then sized and dried. Finally, it was passed through a beetling machine which hammered it to produce the dust repellent sheen. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
