Scope and Content View of beetling machine, Avonbank Bleach and Dye Works, Larkhall, Strathclyde Avonbank Bleach and Dye Works was converted from a printworks c.1836 for D C Miller & Company who imported cotton cloth from Lancashire and, using beetling machines, manufactured cotton roller blinds with a dust-repellent finish known as 'Scotch Holland'. Beetling machines, like this one, had twin rotating rollers (bottom) set on two cast iron A-frames. Another pair of rollers (wiper beams) above had a spiral of cogs (lifters), which raised the rams or beetles (between the rollers) as the rollers turned. Made of 89mm-square pieces of beech, there were 36 beetles on either side of the machine, and these were lifted and dropped individually. The finished cloth wound off between another two rollers and was folded into bales. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
