Scope and Content View from west showing brick and tile works at Blackpots, Aberdeenshire Blackpots Brick and Tile Works, c.3km west of Banff, was first established by Dr Saunders on his farm at Blackpots before 1788, when it was extended by his son. It finally reached its present layout in 1840 when it began manufacturing drainage tiles. This shows the pantile-roofed drying shed, machine shed, kiln and house which make up the site. The 71m-long drying shed has wooden flaps along the sides which can be opened and closed to control the temperature within the shed. Clay was extracted from a quarry nearby and transported in hand-operated bogies on a narrow-gauge railway (centre right). Pantiles were produced until the early 20th century, and bricks until 1946. Field drainage tiles were still produced in the 1970s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
