Scope and Content Fort and fortlet at Cargill, Perth and Kinross This Roman fort and fortlet stand about 250 m apart at Cargill. The fort was probably built first, and possibly guarded a crossing point on the River Isla. It was replaced by the fortlet when a full regiment was no longer required in the area. This is a plan showing the layout of the fort. The annexe to the NW was probably planned before the construction of the fort as there are no ditches protecting the fort's NW side. The position of the roads inside the fort is also marked. Both sites were discovered by aerial photography in 1941 and have since been excavated. Few dateable finds were recovered, but the sites appear to date from the first century AD. Some Samian ware was discovered by the fort's SW entrance. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
