Scope and Content Fort and temporary camps at Crawford, South Lanarkshire This Roman fort is at Crawford. It was suspected that there was a fort in this area as early as the 18th century, but it was not discovered until 1938, through aerial photography. The fort had several phases of occupation. The temporary camps are nearby. This is a plan of the site showing the layout of the fort during the 1st century AD or Flavian period. It consisted of a 5.5 m wide rampart with two outer ditches, each 3 m wide. A third ditch also protected the N and W flanks. The fort was possibly built c. AD 80, during Agricola's early campaigns, and abandoned c. AD 86. It was re-occupied c. AD 140, and was finally abandoned for good c. AD 170, with either a second short break in occupation or a reorganisation in between. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
