Scope and Content Temporary camp at Glenlochar, Dumfries and Galloway This Roman fort is at Glenlochar. It is built on the E side of the river Dee its location gives it a strategic importance. There appears to be more than one phase of building at the site. There are at least four temporary camps nearby. This is an aerial view of the site. The layout of the temporary camp can be seen as a series of cropmarks above and to the left of the modern buildings. It is rectangular in plan, with rounded corners. Nothing remains of the camp on the ground. The site was discovered through aerial photography in 1949. Local tradition believed an abbey had stood on the site. It was excavated in 1952. The three forts had been built on top of each other, with the earliest being systematically abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
