Scope and Content Burgh Cross, Canongate Kirk, Edinburgh The 16th-century Burgh Cross, from where proclamations were made and executions carried out, stands in the street near the Canongate Kirk. Originally it stood in the middle of the street opposite the Tolbooth. The cross has the original 16th-century octagonal shaft. In 1888 it was provided with a new base, capital and cross-head. In the 16th century, the Canongate Burgh Cross was not only the focal point for trade but also where public executions and Royal proclamations were made. Later, it was used as a pillory where the culprit was chained to the cross by an iron collar. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
