Scope and Content View of ore shed and charcoal shed at Bonawe Ironworks, Argyll and Bute Just outside the village of Taynuilt, c.15km east of Oban, is Bonawe Ironworks. Established in 1752-3 by Richard Ford & Company as an outpost of their works in Cumbria, it was leased to Sir Duncan Campbell and the 3rd Earl of Breadalbane for 110 years. These sheds were used to store iron ore (left) and charcoal (right). The iron ore was barrowed from this shed to the furnace as required. The charcoal used in the furnace had to be kept dry, and the sheds were well-ventilated to allow air to pass through. Charcoal for Bonawe was produced using a rotational system of coppicing - trees were cut down and burnt in charcoal kilns over a central fire. Closed in 1874, Bonawe is now in the care of Historic Scotland who have restored these buildings. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
