Description Furnace, Craleckan Ironworks. General view from North-West.

Date 1983

Catalogue Number A 63148

Category Photographs and Off-line Digital Images

Copies SC 355165

Scope and Content Craleckan Ironworks, Furnace, Argyll, Strathclyde Craleckan Ironworks on the shore of Loch Fyne was founded in 1755 by the Duddon Furnace Company from Furness in England. It exploited local wood for smelting iron ore brought via the loch from Lancashire and Cumberland. The works closed in 1813, and only the furnace complex and the remains of a charcoal shed survive. A cast iron lintel above the tuyere opening bears the inscription: 'CF' or 'GF' and the date '1755'. In the 18th century, the timber supply attracted several iron companies to Scotland, including an Irish co-partnership at Glen Kinglass, and two English companies from Furness at Craleckan and at Bonawe - now the best-preserved site.
