Scope and Content Late 17th-century view of Old Aberdeen Old Aberdeen, originally 'Kirktoun of Aberdon', grew up around St Machar's Cathedral, built for the bishopric established in 1125-30. It was eventually absorbed by the royal burgh, 'New Aberdeen', centred on the harbour at the mouth of the Dee. This view was published around 1693, but must have been drawn before the collapse of the tower of St Machar's Cathedral (in the centre), in 1688. King's College, with its distinctive crown steeple, is to the right. The view is from John Slezer's 'Theatrum Scotiae' published around 1693. It was the first Scottish topographical book to provide bird's-eye views of important burghs, houses and gardens. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
