Description West Elevation of Market Cross insc. 'Aberdeen Market Cross, built by John Montgomery, mason, Old Ranyne, Aberdeenshire in 1686 in front of Tolbooth near site of two older crosses. Repaired 1821, removed to present site 1837. Arches were enclosed originally. The work cost ?100 which sum was paid out of the Guild Wine Fund. Mens et delt. 1907. R.W.Johnston.'

Scope and Content Drawing of west elevation of Market Cross, Castlegate, Aberdeen Originally a small settlement at the mouth of the Denburn, northew Aberdeen was created a royal burgh by David I c.1124-53. It incorporated Old Aberdeen (originally Kirkton of Aberdon), which had grown up around St Machar's Cathedral. Aberdeen Market Cross was first erected by John Montgomery of Old Rayne in 1686. Originally sited in front of the tolbooth, it was repaired by John Smith in 1821-2, and again in 1841-2, when it was moved to its present site in Castlegate. This drawing shows an elevation of the cross. The arcaded base, originally with enclosed arches, is circular in shape. The frieze above has 12 panels containing armorials of the Crown (the Stuart monarchs) and the city. A unicorn tops the decorated shaft. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
