Scope and Content Photographic copy of drawing showing proposed restoration of Provost Ross's House, Shiprow, Aberdeen Shiprow leads from Exchequer Row (where the Mint stood in the 12th century) down to the harbour. This area was among the first to experience slum clearances in Aberdeen in the 1890s, when it became vastly overcrowded and unfit for human habitation. Provost Ross's House stands halfway down Shiprow. It was built by George Johnstone in 1593, and takes its name from Provost John Ross of Arnage, who traded with the Low Countries, and lived in the house in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. After World War II, Provost Ross's House was threatened with demolition. However, the Corporation of the City of Aberdeen decided to save the building and this drawing from 1948 by James Fenton Wyness shows his proposals for its restoration.
