Scope and Content View of King's College, Old Aberdeen King's College was founded by Bishop Elphinstone in 1495 with the support of King James IV, hence the name. It was a truly Renaissance institution with a classical humanist curriculum modelled on that of Paris, Europe's intellectual trend-setter. The core of the college, including the chapel seen here, was built around 1498-1505. It had timber foundations on what is known to have been swampy ground. The crown steeple was rebuilt in 1633 after storm damage. Old Aberdeen, originally 'Kirktoun of Aberdon', grew up around St Machar's Cathedral, built for the bishopric established in 1125-30. It was eventually absorbed by the royal burgh, 'New Aberdeen', centred on the harbour at the mouth of the Dee. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
