Scope and Content Fort at Barochan Hill, Renfrewshire This Roman fort is at Barochan Hill. The ground it is built on is now a mixture of pasture and scrubland. Little of the defences remain at ground level, though traces of the rampart are still evident. This is an aerial view of the site. The fort can be seen as a rectangular cropmark at the centre of the image, just by the trees. The defences consisted of a single rampart, probably with a palisade along the top. There were no outer ditches here. The site has been excavated several times. The location of two of the internal buildings was discovered, suggesting that the fort faced W. Evidence for tile making was also found along with ovens and pot sherds. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
