Scope and Content Fort at Lyne, Scottish Borders This fort at Lyne is on a plateau above a bend in Lyne Water. It was built to replace the first century fort at Easter Happrew which was abandoned c.AD 86. The new fort was built close to a Roman road built when the area was reoccupied in the 2nd century. This is an aerial view of the site with the fort visible on the right side of the image. The fort faced E, which was tactically the weakest side. The ground to the E gave a level of natural cover to any force approaching from this direction. The site has been excavated. It was built in the late Antonine period, but only seems to have been occupied for a few years. No inscriptions have been found on the site, but it probably housed a 'cohors milliaria equitata' (cavalry regiment). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
