Scope and Content Fort, fortlet and temporary camps at Milton, Dumfries and Galloway This Roman fort, fortlet and temporary camps are at Milton of Tassieholm. This complex, multi-phase site probably dates from the Flavian to Antonine periods and suggests an early, Flavian advance into Scotland. This is an aerial view of the site. Several features can be seen as cropmarks. The temporary camp is in the middle of the image, by the trees. In the field above it can be seen a fortlet and the annexe of the fort, which is in the top field. The site was excavated between 1938 and 1950 by J. Clarke. Some pottery, including Samian Ware, was recovered. The excavations did show that the forts had been systematically dismantled before being abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
