Scope and Content Fort, fortlet and temporary camps at Milton, Dumfries and Galloway This Roman fort, fortlet and temporary camps are at Milton of Tassieholm. This complex, multi-phase site probably dates from the Flavian to Antonine periods and suggests an early, Flavian advance into Scotland. This is an aerial view of the site in which the fort can be seen as a series of cropmarks. There actually show two forts, one built over the other. Inside is a possible native settlement. Below the trees is the S end of the fort and its annexe. The site was excavated between 1938 and 1950 by J. Clarke. Some pottery, including Samian Ware, was recovered. The excavations did show that the forts had been systematically dismantled before being abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
