Scope and Content Fort at Whitemoss, Bishopton This Roman fort is at Whitemoss, Bishopton. It is built at the NW end of a flat-topped hill, overlooking the surrounding area. Due to cultivation ploughing away the remains, nothing can be seen at ground level. This is an aerial view of the fort with the outline seen as a series of cropmarks. It was protected by a rampart and up to four ditches. There are obvious breaks in the inner ditches, but not in the outer ones suggesting there were two phases of use. This fort would have probably been to control the nearby Dumbruck ford, and to spot hostile groups approaching through the Vale of Leven. Sherds of Antonine pottery have been found on the site.
