Ravenstone Moss, paddle

SC 352867

Description Ravenstone Moss, paddle

Catalogue Number SC 352867

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of DC 36096 PO

Scope and Content Paddle from group found near a probable crannog in Ravenstone Moss, Glasserton, Wigtownshire, Dumfries and Galloway The logboat (otherwise known as a 'dugout' or 'canoe') is a simple and 'primitive' boat, but this does not imply that it is necessarily early, most examples recovered being medieval or later in date. This paddle is in the National Museum of Scotland. Its unusual asymmetric form may be due to wear, may suggest an identification as a rudder or may indicate that it was used for some purpose other than navigation.
