Scope and Content Fort and settlement at Inveresk, East Lothian This Roman fort and civilian settlement are at Inveresk. The presence of Roman remains was first noted in 1565 when parts of an altar were found. The main fort, built during the Antonine period (2nd century AD), was located in the late 1940s. This is an aerial view of the site. Very little of the fort and settlement remains and ground level, though sections of the rampart have been identified. Part of the site is under a graveyard, making it hard to excavate. The site was first excavated in the 1940s, 1970s and the 1990s. It is the most extensive and best preserved Roman settlement in Scotland. There appears to be at least two phases of occupation. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
