Scope and Content Fort and temporary camps at Castledykes, South Lanarkshire This fort and temporary camps are at Castledykes, near Carstairs. They stand on a plateau overlooking a number of natural routes through the area. There were at least three phases of occupation at the site. The temporary camps lie NE and NW of the fort. This is a plan showing the layout of the fort. It had the typical plan of a square with rounded corners, and was protected by a rampart and a series of outer ditches. The building shown at the centre of the fort is the headquarters or principia. The fort was probably first built during Agricola's third or fourth Scottish campaign, in the AD 80s, and was abandoned about AD 86. It was re-built about AD 142, with minor alterations in the AD 150s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
