Scope and Content Township, Tonnagaoithe, Glen Dee, Mar Lodge Estate, Aberdeenshire Townships are clusters of dwelling houses and barns, enclosures, kilns and cultivation rigs. They were the homes of people practising mixed farming, both cultivation of crops and stock-rearing, mostly cattle. The buildings and enclosure walls of the township are visible across the parallel ridges of the cultivated field. Mar Lodge estate was part of the medieval Earldom of Mar. The Forest of Mar became a hunting reserve in medieval times and was revived as such in the 19th century, after a period of sheep-farming in the 18th and early 19th centuries.
