Scope and Content Musicians' gallery inside the school at New Lanark, Lanarkshire New Lanark was founded in 1785 by David Dale and Richard Arkwright. It passed to Dale's son-in-law, Robert Owen, in 1799. Owen developed the village into a model community, aiming to make it both profitable and humane. This musicians' gallery shows that Owen intended the children to receive a full education that included the 'Arts', rather than just a basic education designed to make them into good workers.
