Scope and Content Firebox of kiln at Benriach Distillery, Elgin, Moray Benriach Distillery was built in 1898 but bought out and closed in 1900. It was reopened after 1965 when it was rebuilt by Glenlivet Distilleries Ltd. It was sold to Seagram Company Ltd of Canada in 1977. Malted barley is spread out on the drying-floor and heated by the kiln beneath. Once it is dry, it is used to make whisky. The system of elevator, barley band and bogie is needed because the stored grain must be kept dry and well aired before it is turned to malt by soaking it in the steeps and allowing it to germinate on the malting floor. It is then dried in the kiln. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
