Scope and Content Pot still apparatus from Lagavulin, Islay This small pot-still, believed to be from the Lagavulin district, is typical of the equipment used by small producers in earlier times. It was particularly popular with illegal operators, until their traditional, but illicit, cottage industry was suppress The liquid in the pot-still is heated so that the alcoholic spirits evaporate and pass through the 'lyne-arm' and into the 'worm' where the cold water in the 'worm tub' cools and condenses them. The resulting distillate is collected at the spirit outlet. To make whisky, barley is allowed to germinate into malt. This is dried, milled, and mixed with hot water to make 'wort' which is then fermented with yeast. The resulting 'wash' is distilled to make 'low-wines' which is then distilled to make raw whisky.
