Scope and Content Fort at Mumrills, Falkirk This Roman fort is at Mumrills. Built on a high plateau, it had several phases of occupation. It may have been destroyed and rebuilt twice before it was finally abandoned. There is an annexe to the W and the Antonine Wall to the N. This view was taken during the excavation of the site. It shows a room in the praetorium or commandant's house. Only the stone foundations remain, but the shape of the room is obvious. In the room are the remains of the hypocaust heating-system. The site was excavated in 1923-8 by Macdonald, and again in 1958-60 with an emergency excavation conducted by the RCAHMS. The fort may have been occupied by a cavalry regiment, the Ala I Tungrorum, and the infantry regiment, the Cohors II Thracum. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
