Scope and Content Fort at Mumrills, Falkirk This Roman fort is at Mumrills. Built on a high plateau, it had several phases of occupation. It may have been destroyed and rebuilt twice before it was finally abandoned. There is an annexe to the W and the Antonine Wall to the N. This view was taken during the excavation of the site in the 1920s. It shows a section of the foundation of the W rampart. Though the rampart itself would have been constructed from turf and clay, it was built on a stone base. The site was excavated in 1923-8 by Macdonald, and again in 1958-60 with an emergency excavation conducted by the RCAHMS. The fort may have been occupied by a cavalry regiment, the Ala I Tungrorum, and the infantry regiment, the Cohors II Thracum. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
