Scope and Content Fort at Fendoch, Perth and Kinross This Roman fort is at Fendoch. Built on top of a small plateau, it guarded the route to the Highlands at the Sma' Glen. Reported in the 18th century, subsequent ploughing flattened the ramparts and the fort was forgotten until rediscovery in 1936. This is an aerial view of the site. The outline of the fort can be seen in crop-marks on the ground's surface. The fort is less square as other examples, but this is due in part to the shape of the plateau it is built on. The rampart was over 6 m wide. The site was excavated during the 1930s. Though little dateable evidence was found, the fort was built in the first century AD. When the fort was abandoned, the buildings were systematically dismantled, suggesting that this was a planned withdrawal. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
