Scope and Content Fort and fortlet at Cargill, Perth and Kinross This Roman fort and fortlet stand about 250 m apart at Cargill. The fort was probably built first, and possibly guarded a crossing point on the River Isla. It was replaced by the fortlet when a full regiment was no longer required in the area. This is an aerial view of the fortlet. It is a double-ditched enclosure. There appear to be two entrances, one in the NW side, at the top of the image, and the other opposite in the SE side. Both sites were discovered by aerial photography in 1941 and have since been excavated. Few dateable finds were recovered, but the sites appear to date from the first century AD. Some Samian ware was discovered by the fort's SW entrance. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
